What is Somatic Parts Work?

Somatic Parts Work, developed by Susan McConnell, draws on principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, created by Richard Schwartz. It is a powerful, somatic practice that invites us into relationship with the many inner voices, feelings, and identities that live within us, our "parts". These parts carry their own stories, shaped by personal experience, cultural conditioning, family dynamics, and moments of pain or protection. At the centre of it all is the Self, your true essence. The Self is calm, clear, compassionate, and deeply wise. It is not a part, but the wholeness beneath all parts. From this place, we can meet every part of ourselves with curiosity and care, gently unburdening the past and returning to the truth of who we are.

Somatic parts work or Somatic IFS involves five main practices which weave together to create a whole system. The practies are Somatic Awareness, Conscious Breathing, Radical Resonance, Mindful Movement, and Attuned Touch. We work with each practice as and when they are needed during the coaching process.

 

Your essence wants to be felt in its wholeness - all of the light as well as the shadow. What would happen if you got curious and moved towards the parts of you that feel uncomfortable, wrong, or painful? As these parts are witnessed and integrated into your whole being, they loosen their grip and have less power over how you show up in the world. As an IFS-informed coach, I will support you in cultivating more Self-energy, gaining clarity in your life and leading with more creativity, courage, and love.​​

Embodiment

We look to the body as a source of wisdom during times of both stillness and change, as the body world is naturally linked with the authentic self. By creating space to be with the body and inner landscape through somatic awareness, movement practices, breathwork, and self-touch, we allow for deeper, more intimate self-connection. The body holds stories our minds may not yet understand. When we give ourselves permission to feel, to sense, and to be with what is, we can release trapped emotion and energy held in the body from past experiences and trauma. As the body softens and lets go of this stored tension, space is created for us to expand into our fullness. We feel more alive, fulfilled and inspired to share our gifts with the world.

 

Often the most profound healing can come not by speaking about the past or making sense of it with the mind, but by listening to and trusting deeply in the wisdom of the body.

Sessions are then offered as packages at £70 per session.

Sessions are 1 hour and held online via Zoom or can be held in-person out in nature in Falmouth, Cornwall.
